Spring brings more activities at Carter County s state parks

ELIZABETHTON — With the coming of spring, more events are being offered in the two state parks in Carter County. April is always a busy time for the parks, highlighted with the annual spring Naturalist Rally at Roan Mountain State Park. With the need to continue following state park guidelines for the COVID-19 pandemic, the rally will be shortened to one day this year instead of the normal three days, and there will be no dinners or evening programs. There will be plenty of field trips offered and all trips are free. The rally takes place on Saturday, April 24 and preregistration is required. Registration can be done online at https://www.friendsofroanmtn.org/2021-spring-rally.

Preparing porridge, soup and other meals, Adkins feeds more than 100 children and 80 elderly and young adults daily. The mother of four said the children she saw on the streets were her biggest inspiration. “What inspired me was seeing most of the children going to town looking for food. So to keep them out of danger and away from crime and in school I realised the best way is to make sure they have a full tummy and don t go looking for it somewhere else,” said Adkins, 36.

Playwright Glen Berger takes this experience to the next level when he imagines a young librarian finding a book in the overnight deposit chute that is 113 years overdue. The book has enticing notes written in the margins that motivate our heroine to take a journey of self-discovery as she goes around the world defying the bounds of space and time, seeking to collect the fine for this book.

City reworking landscape at 5th Street interchange

The city of Grand Junction is replacing the landscaping at the Fifth Street and Riverside Parkway interchange to make the area more sustainable to maintain. Parks and Recreation Director Ken Sherbenou said the design of the landscaping that had been in place resulted in significant issues for upkeep and maintenance. The irrigation system that had been installed would freeze and result in insufficient water flowing to the plantings, he said. The plantings themselves were also an issue. “There were a lot of poor choices for plant selection,” Sherbenou said. “For example, roses were put in the interchange and those belong at the Lincoln Park Rose Garden not at the Fifth Street interchange. The plant life in the original design was not really appropriate for what is a landscape such as the Fifth Street interchange.”
